About The Park

Kanha National Park, which boasts the ideal habitat for both tigers and their prey species, was one of the first areas to be protected under Project Tiger, aimed at preserving this magnificent animal, and remains a renowned conservation area.
The fine texture of the soil found in this region is known as Kanhar in the local language, which gave the park its name. Kanha has an area of 940 sq.km and is home to various rare and exotic species of mammals, reptiles and trees. With some 300 avifauna species, this place is also a heaven for bird watchers. The park is also one of the last places in the entire world to house hard-ground barasingha, also called the southern swamp deer.
The park features lush sal and bamboo forests interspersed with vast grassy meadows, known as maidans. The Banjaar River, which forms the southwestern border of the park, provides a crucial water source for the abundant wildlife.
The park is not only a haven for wildlife but also a place steeped in history, having been ruled by the Gondwana dynasty. The local tribes, including the Gond and Baiga, have lived in harmony with the forest for generations, showcasing a unique coexistence between wildlife and human life. Their deep understanding of the jungle contributes to reducing human-wildlife conflict in the area.
